Datawind, the manufacturer of cheapest tablet Akash, is holding a press event on March 17 where it is expected to launch a low-cost smartphone in India with free internet for life last year.
Notably, last year we covered the news that Datawind is preparing to launch a smartphone that will come with lifetime internet.
Currently, there is no information regarding the partnership of Datawind with any network operator, but according to the reports, Datawind will tie up with private operator.
Earlier this year, we also reported that Datawind is in talks with a “private operator to launch mobile phones with free basic Internet services for one year.”
As far as the specifications are concerned, the Datawind smartphone is rumored to come with 4-inch display, 1.2GHz processor, Android KitKat and 3G connectivity.
The company will also launch the 2G-only variant, but the highlight of both handsets will be DataWind’s data compression feature allowing free Internet connectivity on low end devices.
As for the price, the smartphone is expected to be priced below Rs 5,000, may be between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 3,000. The company has started sending invites for the event, which reads, “It is my proud privilege to invite you to join us at the launch of yet another revolution.
A revolution that will connect and empower a billion Indians, helping fulfill the grand vision of a Digital India.”
