At TechCrunch Disrupt, Estimote just announced Mirror, a smart beacon device that allows for hands-free interactions with smart TVs.
The system is incredibly futuristic. A user simply plugs Mirror into their smart TV, and when a beacon-compatible phone or another beacon moves near the mirror, a preset video or interactive view of an item pops up on the display screen. This can allow for highly personalized ads; through communicating with other apps, Mirror can figure out exactly what sorts of products a customer would like and display appropriate media.
A world with Mirror everywhere will be much like the one depicted in the movie, “Minority Report”; only it would not be eyeballs, but smartphones, that will be scanned by the display system.
Bluetooth beacons are already widely used to track customers and send them customized messages, and 70 percent of Fortune 100 companies already use Estimote’s technology. Mirror is just a logical next step in the development, and is sure to change the way products are advertised to consumers.
